Egyptian journalist Donia Samir has been imprisoned for two years since her arrest on May 27, 2022. She appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution on May 29, 2022, and has been held in
pretrial detention in case number 440 of 2022, registered with the Supreme State Security. Her detention stems from a video she posted on Facebook, in which she reported being harassed by the Governor of South Sinai.
Samir faces charges including membership in a terrorist organization, spreading false news and information, and misusing social media.
Donia’s defence team informed the authorities that she is a mother of four children, appealing for mercy on their behalf and requesting her release under any precautionary measures to secure their future. They also highlighted that she has not seen her children since her arrest, nor has anyone visited her in the women’s prison where she is held.
