Yesterday, the Foundation joined a delegation of German human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Reporters Without Borders, Tibet Initiative Deutschland, World Uyghur Congress, Freiheit für Hongkong, and RAZAM e.V., in a session at the Bundestag.
The session featured testimonies from human rights defenders about their experiences of transnational repression on German soil aimed at silencing them.
During the meeting, participating organizations made recommendations to the German government aimed at addressing such repression and protecting the diaspora community from persecution and threats.
Basma Mostafa, Programs Manager at LDSF, presented an overview of Egyptian authorities’ actions against Egyptian human rights defenders in Germany. She emphasized the necessity of implementing local and international measures to safeguard individuals in the diaspora community from persecution and intimidation.
Law and Democracy Support Foundation urged parliamentarians to recognize transnational repression as a violation of the German constitution, which guarantees the right to freedom of opinion and expression. They called for the establishment of a dedicated human rights body to handle complaints of transnational repression and for educating German investigative authorities on these issues. Additionally, they advocated for providing psychological and social support to members of the diaspora community facing transnational repression.
