Journalist Tawfiq Ghanem has completed 3 years of pretrial detention in connection with Case No. 238 of 2021 (State Security Prosecution). Ghanrm, aged 68, was arrested from his home on May 21, 2021. After 5 days of enforced disappearance, he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution, which ordered his pretrial detention on charges of “joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media.” Since then, his detention has been continuously renewed, despite exceeding the legally specified duration for pretrial detention.
Ghanem suffers from prostate enlargement, diabetes, nerve inflammation in his legs and knees, and lower back problems. Throughout his detention, he has been held in poor conditions that have affected his health. His family reported that he appeared very ill and had lost a significant amount of weight due to the high temperatures and lack of ventilation in his cell. Tawfiq Ghanem remains in custody, awaiting his release.
Tawfik Ghanem is an experienced Egyptian journalist with over 30 years in the field. During his career, he held leadership positions in several media organizations, including Media International, which managed the Islam Online website for a decade. Additionally, he served as the regional director of the Anadolu Agency in Cairo until his retirement in 2015.
