Gaza and Sudan

Cairo – Today, Wednesday, the Supreme State Security Prosecution in Cairo decided to release all detainees arrested yesterday following their participation in a demonstration in solidarity with Gaza and Sudan in front of the UN Women’s office in Cairo. They had been charged with affiliation with a terrorist group and unlawful assembly with the intent to disrupt security and public order, under case number 1625 for the year 2024.

The decision to release on bail, pending the case, was set at ten thousand Egyptian pounds for each of the lawyers Ragia Omran and Mahienour El-Masry, and the journalists Rasha Azb and Iman Auf; and five thousand pounds for the rest of the detainees, except for the journalists Youssef Shaaban and Mohamed Farag, whose release was ordered based on their place of residence.

Additionally, the Ministry of the Interior released an unknown number of activists and citizens who were arrested yesterday without being brought before the prosecution.

Egyptian security forces arrested several women who participated in the demonstration in front of the regional office of the United Nations in Cairo, which demanded an end to the wars in Gaza and Sudan. The list of detainees included journalists, lawyers, and activists in women’s rights, who reportedly experienced pushing, beating, and theft of their phones according to participant accounts.
