The Supreme State Security Prosecution today decided to renew the detention of director Omar Salah Marrei for an additional 15 days pending investigations. Marei faces charges of “spreading false news” in Case No. 3835 of 2026 (State Security State Registry), in connection with opinions he posted on social media platforms.
Omar suffers from a thyroid condition, in addition to severe medical complications in his hand and wrist. This deterioration is a direct result of the Badr 6 Prison administration’s refusal to grant requests made by his defense team to have him examined by an orthopedic specialist and a mental health professional.
Months prior to his arrest, Omar survived a severe accident that resulted in a fractured wrist requiring surgical intervention, during which nine screws and two metal plates were implanted. He remains in the recovery and physical therapy phase, requiring continuous medical attention. However, since his enforced disappearance for several days starting on May 11, followed by his appearance before the State Security Prosecution on May 15, Omar has been denied adequate medical care. This deprivation has led to severe medical complications amid a total absence of any precise medical assessment to determine the extent of the damage or the treatment he urgently requires.
It is worth noting that this marks the third consecutive time the Supreme State Security Prosecution has extended Omar’s pretrial detention for a 15-day period pending investigation.
