The New Cairo Misdemeanor Court in the Fifth Settlement sentenced political activist and writer Ahmed Douma today, Wednesday, to one year in prison with hard labor and immediate effect, after convicting him of “publishing and broadcasting false news and statements” in Case No. 4894 of 2026, Fifth Settlement Misdemeanors.

The Supreme State Security Prosecution had opened its investigations against Douma following his arrest on April 6. It leveled charges against him of publishing false statements and rumors at home and abroad through press articles and social media posts.

The trial came against the backdrop of an opinion article published by Douma last March, in addition to posts in which he addressed the conditions of detention inside reform and rehabilitation centers.

Notably, this ruling comes less than two years after Ahmed Douma’s release from prison in August 2023 under a presidential pardon, after spending nearly 10 years in prison over previous political cases.
