Law and Democracy Support Foundation (LDSF) announces a positive development in the case of Egyptian activist Mariam Mohamed El-Sayed Abdelbasette. Omani authorities allowed her earlier today to leave the hospital and return to her residence in the capital, Muscat, accompanied by her newborn baby.
LDSF commends this positive development, which brings an end to a difficult period endured by the mother and her child following childbirth. We extend our sincere gratitude to all human rights organizations, UN mechanisms, diplomatic missions, media outlets, and activists who closely monitored her situation and contributed to supporting her over the past days.
LDSF calls on the relevant Omani authorities to continue this positive course by lifting any administrative restrictions, removing her name from any travel ban lists, and allowing Mariam to travel freely to any destination of her choice. This would also help prevent a recurrence of the incident in mid-April, when she was barred from departing through Muscat International Airport.
Furthermore, LDSF issues an urgent appeal to the Egyptian authorities to facilitate all necessary legal and diplomatic procedures for issuing official identification documents, including a passport, as well as a birth certificate for the newborn, ensuring his human and legal rights and protecting him from any future procedural obstacles.
